One feature I noticed on other subscription service providers was branding – either for a particular client or a particular project. It would be nice to be able to change the look and feel and text content of headers to something more in line with our clients. We allow clients to log into Unfuddle to issue tickets and it would be nice if they could see their own name and colors or at least something close somewhere on the page. It’s not an essential feature but would be nice to have. |

This has actually been on our radar for a while, including allow our customers to mask their domains (i.e. projects.mycompany.com). As with a number of other features, this is on our roadmap immediately after the release of both the new Wiki and Unfuddle API in the coming weeks. |

Thought as much. You guys are totally on the ball. We’re running 12 projects on Unfuddle and will be increasing that over the next few months. Our clients really like the service. Keep up the good work. |

We have clients as well which would greatly benefit from having direct access to Unfuddle, but I am hesitant to even admit we are using Unfuddle for fear they will protest about storing their source code on a 3rd party system. Myself, I delayed signing up for many months because I wondered about the security of storing source code on someone else’s server… until I realized we were pretty much doing it already by sending source code via e-mail. Any thoughts on whether clients accept 3rd party hosting solutions for their source code? The branding of projects.domain.com will certainly hide that fact, and I can’t wait to start using that when it’s ready. Thanks, |

David / dcsoft, Indeed it required me some sort of persuasion to get my client to approve but in the end I “prevailed.” Unfuddle is so comfortable it’s really hard for me to go back to (plain) Subversion or setting up SCM server and tools by myself. No way. SSL increases the security a little bit. What’s probably “scarier” is whether we trust Unfuddle/Subventurate guys and the server(s) they’re putting our code into (Rackspace). Well I just hope we can, cause I really don’t know their office or where they sleep and I never met them. But hopefully we can sue them easily if they do anything nasty (whether intentional or not) with our code. Not that we expect that to actually happen. |

+1 on branding. A CSS override & uploadable logo would be plenty. FYI Rackspace is great, I’ve worked with them extensively on many large projects & I trust them. But I still have a daily svn download job that pulls everything down to my local server. You could encrypt your source if you wanted that extra security. |

Hendy … I really hate to see that evil cuss word “sue” used on these forums. Unfuddle is like any hosted service – they don’t guarantee that your data is safe (unless they specifically offer disaster tolerance, which Unfuddle clearly don’t). What they do provide an obvious and easy way to download a backup of your projects, and it’s entirely up to you to take advantage of that. If some disaster took out Rackspace’s operations center, or some Black Hat messed with your code, and you didn’t have a recent backup … that’d be your problem. Expecting to “sue them easily” because you chose not to backup your data would be ridiculous. Classic modern day American “I’m not responsible for myself, it’s all someone else’s fault!!” mentality that just makes my flesh crawl. That said, I would certainly like to see a “Disaster tolerance” feature as an optional extra in the higher level packages offered by Unfuddle, whereby they provide nightly offsite backups to some other provider the other side of the country from the primary site. I’d be more than happy to pay a few extra bucks a month for this. But as things stand … if your data is mission critical … “request a comprehensive archive” is your friend!

Thanks cheesegrits. I didn’t mean that to be a negative statement. I agree that periodic backups would be something that we as customers should also do, and Unfuddle provides the facility do to that easily. The specific scenario I had was a “story” I’ve heard (from a web site, was that an urban legend?) was that a hard drive was for sale that contained several gigs of user data. (IIRC, it was pictures and multimedia stuff) In some corporate settings, destroyed data is bad (when have recent backup, lesser bad), but is still much better than stolen data (or data mistakenly into unauthorized hands). |

To get back on topic, I still want branding. The company login page needs to be more plain. Less Unfuddle and more on the company itself. Maybe with a big logo, and big text. And it’s us. And definitely not the “free” part anywhere on the page unless we’re really logging into a free account. |
